If a program is not responding or the system is frozen you can
Force Quit the program or restart the Finder. In order to Force Quit simultaneously depress

APPLE + OPTION + ESCAPE

A dialog box will appear with all the major processes displayed
Select the unresponsive application and click Force Quit.

To reset the Finder, select the finder from the dialog box and select Force Quit.  Restarting the finder quits all open applications and restarts the Finder Process without having to shut the computer down.
