A common vector for the spread of computer viruses and other malicious software is through email attachments. Newark Computing Services(NCS ) has configured its mail servers (Andromeda and Pegasus) to block a series of email attachments for your protection. The following email attachments will be rejected by Andromeda and Pegasus. If an incoming or outgoing email message contains these attachments, it will be returned to the sender.

Single Extensions -

ade adp app bas bat chm cmd com cpl crt emf exe fxp grp hlp hta inf ins

isp js jse lnk mda mdb mde mdw mdt mdz msc msi msp mst ops pcd pif

prg rar reg scr sct shb shs vb vbe vbs wmf wsc wsf wsh

Double Extensions -

something.gif.exe
something.bat.scr

The filenames above are examples.  Any filename with two extensions will be blocked. Any file determined to be an executable, regardless of the filename will be deleted.

Note:  The contents of various "archive" or "zip" files are also subject to these rules, but we do not block zip or archive files. If a file within an archived file is found to be infected, it will be treated as such according the rules above.

Similar initiatives have been taken on all campuses to protect students, faculty and staff:
