Users
desiring a lightweight and rapid method for accessing university email should
consider Pine, a free email client available on both the Andromeda and Pegasus
servers. Pine is a text-only,
command-line program (ie no graphics, no mouse navigation) but is therefore
capable of reading, editing, and deleting email messages -much- faster than
graphical and web- based clients. NCS
particularly recommends the use of Pine in deleting very large amounts of
email.
Normally,
to access Pine, a user must establish a secure telnet (SSH) connexion to the
server where her account is hosted.
Common SSH clients include the Mac OS X Terminal [hyperlink] and, for
Windows, the Putty and SSH Communications programs. The latter two clients are available free on
the university software site.
After establishing an SSH connexion and logging on
(with one's NetID), a user can invoke the Pine pro- gram by typing 'pine' at
the command prompt.
