I have noticed some legitimate email messages gets filtered into my spam folder. I have also noticed some spam messages gets into my inbox. Does this mean my spam filter is not working?

No, it is working, just not 100% accurate.  There will be false positives (legitimate mail that gets filed into your Spam folder) and false negatives (Spam that ends up in your inbox).  Spammers use a number of tricks to mask their identities; fooling you into thinking that the e-mail message is legitimate, or that you have subscribed to a mailing list.  Their frequent change in tactics makes it difficult for SpamAssasin to determine whether or not a message is indeed spam.   In some cases, legitimate mailing lists with high rule points are identified as spam and will automatically be sent to the Spam folder. 

It is recommended that you frequently check your Spam Filter folder for legitimate E-mail messages.
