The biohazard page is an automated system that we have in place that detects if your computer is conducting suspicious activities or infected with some kind of a spyware/virus.  Sometimes this system can be difficult to deal with but if we didn't have it in place and someone’s laptop is severely infected, it can bring the whole network down.  Most common reasons for the biohazard screen include:

  • File sharing program (Lime wire, share bear)
  • Spyware/Viral infection
  • Misconfiguration (multiple open active connections

In case you do obtain a biohazard message while you are attempting to use the wireless networks at Rutgers there are several things you can do.

  • First and foremost, please be sure you have an updated antivirus scanner and spyware removal tool.  There are multiple applications out there that one can use.  Please keep in mind, an antivirus program and spyware removal tool are only as efficient as how frequently you update them.  For more information, please contact the Help Desk.

  • You should clear your browsers cookies/cache/temporary files including offline files. In Internet Explorer 7 do this by clicking start then Control panel then Internet Options.  Under the General tab in the section of Browsing history click delete and then click Delete all.  A box will display labeled Delete Browsing History.  In this box place a check next to Also delete files and settings stored by add-ons and then proceed by clicking Yes. This might take some time if it was never done before, once it’s done close the Internet Properties window by clicking OK.

  • You should disable/stop any file sharing (p2p) programs as they cause you to obtain this message. When we say p2p we mean Limewire, Imesh, eDonkey, Kazaa. This also means bit torrent as it creates many outbound/inbound connections like p2p applications. You do NOT have to uninstall these applications just simply exit out of them so they are not running while you are connected to the Rutgers wireless network.
